La leyenda del maíz

The legend of corn

Tap any word to look it up.

An old legend from Mexico says that, in the beginning, people only ate roots and small animals, and they often went hungry. The god Quetzalcóatl wanted to help them, but he didn't know where to find a better food.

One day he saw a red ant carrying a grain of corn. He asked her where she had gotten it, but the ant refused to answer. Quetzalcóatl insisted so much that, at last, she showed him the path to an enormous mountain, where the corn was stored. The path was so narrow that no god could get through.

So Quetzalcóatl turned himself into a black ant and followed the red ant through a long, dark tunnel. When he arrived, he took a grain of corn and carried it to the gods, who tasted it and gave it to the people.

Show English

Since then, corn has been the foundation of Mexican food. Maybe that's why, when someone makes tortillas or tamales, they're still repeating a story thousands of years old, even if they don't know it.
