Last week was the birthday of don Ernesto, a seventy-year-old man who lives in Heredia, Costa Rica. His children wanted to throw him a surprise party, but it was hard, because he always knew everything that went on in the family.
Por eso, su hija Marta lo invitó a tomar café en el centro. Mientras ellos hablaban, los demás llevaron comida, flores y sillas a la casa. Todos trabajaban rápido, porque no tenían mucho tiempo.

So his daughter Marta invited him for coffee downtown. While they talked, the others brought food, flowers and chairs to the house. Everyone worked fast, because they didn't have much time.
Cuando don Ernesto y Marta volvieron, la casa estaba oscura. Él abrió la puerta, encendió la luz y todos gritaron: «¡Sorpresa!» Don Ernesto se rio y lloró al mismo tiempo. Después comieron arroz con pollo y bailaron hasta muy tarde. «Ustedes son increíbles», les dijo a sus hijos.

When don Ernesto and Marta came back, the house was dark. He opened the door, turned on the light and everyone shouted, "Surprise!" Don Ernesto laughed and cried at the same time. Then they ate chicken and rice and danced until very late. "You're incredible," he told his children.
